With four successive victories for the Mini on the Monte Carlo Rally under its belt, the BMC Competitions Department set its sights on an MG entry at the Sebring endurance race in 1967 as the next major challenge. This was to be the first major Works race programme for the MGB GT, having been introduced the previous year. As the B GT had not yet been homologated for competition, it was run in the prototype category, with GRX 307D, the well proven and Marathon winning roadster - complete with hardtop - entered in the GT Class. This, crewed by Rhodes and Makinen, was powered by a 1824cc unit, whilst the B GT, in the stewardship of Hedges and Hopkirk, used a 2004cc unit. Both cars finished third overall in their respective categories, with the B GT being awarded a class win on index.

Professionally constructed using the shell of an MGB GT, this car was built as homage to these early development cars and the 1968 MGC Sebring Coupe. The original body shell was stripped to bare metal and suitably modified before being fitted with new wings, bonnet, doors and panels, new sills, jacking points and front towing eyes to create the correct Sebring appearance. These were then painted in the correct shade of BRG and a Safety Devices roll bar fitted. The interior was completely retrimed and the dash features a recalibrated speedo and Retro Trip 2 distance recorder along with peardrop switches, map light and full harnesses to create the right office environment. A total rewire using all new components, along with rebuilds and enhancements of the braking and steering systems, have been carried out.

Motive power is by a rebuilt 1995cc Oselli Fast Road spec unit (135bhp) with a hand built bespoke Maniflow exhaust system and twin choke Weber carburetter. An uprated cooling system with Kenlowe fan, suspension including Koni and Spax adjustable shocks and new handling kit and roll bars were fitted. The fuel system is all new and features the correct type Sebring filler, and the overdrive gearbox, axle and propshaft have been rebuilt with the car running on 8J Minilite alloys and 225VR15 Dunlops. The vehicle was finally finished with Sebring headlight cowls, all new badges and bright work, correct Orange Ral detail to the front panel and Old English White towing points, professional signage and a new tinted laminated screen.

The above is only a brief synopsis of the work that has gone into creating this outstanding and painstakingly detailed replica, less than 7000 miles covered since the restoration. A recent road test showed it to be a very quick and enjoyable fast road car also suited for a variety of track or historic rally events.
