Original Jaguar 'D' type steering wheel- purported to be the original wheel from the Jaguar 'D' type 'OKV3'.
US Jaguar wheel specialist Mike Lempert made the following comments post viewing detailed photos.
'The rim is correct being beech - identified by abdant ray flakes, possibly refurbished once. It has a unique mustard colour characteristic of beech exposed to 50 years of light. The finger indents on the rear are very correct in number & groupings. It is obvious to me that the rim was made by Coventry Timber Bending - the maker of Jaguar woodrim wheels - identified by the wood type - finger indent patterns. The method of making the idents can be seen on your wheel - you will notice a flat area in the centre of the indents of about 5/32" wide. This is where a table saw blade first scored to mark the placement & depth of the indent - also the indent pattern was intended to have one of the buffers aligned with the spoke. This would have placed all the rivets all the way round the rim on buffers instead of in the indents. In practice the assemblers just smacked them together however they happened to line up. That resulted in virtually no consistency with the alignment of the indents on the rear. This is probably the biggest single idication of its originality - as silly as it sounds, replica makers - including myself -take the time to align the indents as intended'.
