1978 Mini 1275 GT Clubman Elite Landau, by Wood & Pickett.
Bill Wood and Les Pickett set up Wood & Pickett in 1947, moving in to custom Minis in 1966. It was the ex Radford Director Eddie Collins who provided the ‘Margrave’ identity for the conversions, which featured a Clubman de-seamed body with electric sunroof and a distinctive grille, adapted from the Vauxhall Ventora. Further modifications included; a full leather interior, full width leather or veneer dashboard, twin headlamps and various body adaptations.
This stunningly presented 1275 GT was first registered in March 1978 by H.R.Owen of London and was purchased by an international lawyer, as a graduation gift for his son. Wood & Pickett were then commissioned to carry out a ‘Landau’ body conversion, complete with an oval rear & rectangular side windows. A full interior of ‘Elite’ cream Connelly hide and black Wilton carpet complimented the high gloss black paint finish.
Additional interior features included a full width ‘Margrave’ leather dashboard, electrically operated sunroof, tinted glass windows and wing mirrors, plus a drop down rear seat to accommodate a full set of golf clubs for the discerning ‘gent’. A further innovation of the time was the fitment of a ‘Mirrorcator’ interior rear view mirror, which had flashing directional indicators built into the housing.
Having only covered some 15000 miles, in 26 years, the car was returned to Wood & Pickett in 2004 for an overall refurbishment, including new minilite wheels and tyres, engine bay detailing and braided hose replacements, with costs exceeding £7000.
For Mini enthusiasts, this car represents an icon of the 70’s decade, when coachbuilders such as Hooper, Radford and W&P were encouraged to customise the standard fare of the day, for which we should be eternally grateful.
