Salvatore Ruffino, whose company was the Italian distributor for Standard Triumph, was convinced there was a market for a sophisticated two-seater coupe based on the TR3A chassis. Giovanni Michelotti styled this attractive car with echoes of his Maserati 3500 design, and it was shown at Turin in 1958. Ruffino commissioned Vignale to build 1000, though only 329 were actually built between 1959 and 1962. Triumph withdrew its support after being taken over by Leyland Motors in 1961, introducing the TR4 with wind-up windows and optional Surrey top body styles that made it quite similar to the much more expensive Italia.
