Malta Valletta GP

Malta Valletta GP

Just come back from a great 4 days motor sport in Malta competing in a Triumph TR3A in the Valletta Grand Prix. This prestigious annual event is becoming internationally renowned with participants from all over Europe attending. Consisting of three separate events The Mdina GP Mtahleb Hill Climb, Mdina Glass Concours d’Elegance and The Malta Circuit.

On the Thursday was the Mdina GP Mtahleb Hill Climb. It was a challenging and precarious climb on very rough road which resulted in the bonnet popping up on my last run! denying me my best time.

Friday consisted of Concours d’Elegance, where participants were required to dress in a costume of a style pertaining to the year of manufacture of the vehicle. Appropriately I throw on my best 1959 wardrobe and headed for Cathedral Square where the Triumph was jostling with a Aston Martin DB4-and many original Malta delivered cars-the overall winner was a lovely MG A roadster-belonging to Ernest Sullivan for which we supplied some parts for previously.

The weekend lead to The Malta Circuit, a very competitive race which saw me put a lap time just one second behind Ex Formula One Hesketh driver Rupert Keegan-driving a similar red highly tuned TR3a.This circuit had me feeling the spirit of classic car motor sport and blast from the past as drivers showed ruthlessness in getting the quickest possible lap times. I did scare myself a little on the last lap when being pushed hard by the Triumph GT6-i entered the last bend faster than I should have and skidded round gripping the steering wheel with some very white knuckles!

A fantastic old style motor sporting event which i hope to be apart of for many years to come. Friendly local enthusiasts with beautifully presented cars and an uplifting vibe really brought this event to life and will be marked in my calendar for many years to come. Daily temperatures in the high 60's really made for a super climate and worth the effort.

A big thank you to all of the event organisers and my mechanic Paul Seargent who gave me a fast safe Triumph to compete in.
