A very special MX-5.
M2, a side arm of Mazda (Mazda2) was set up as a builder of niche cars alongside the regular production models. In 1991 the 1001 was their first offering and was limited to a run of just 300 cars. Potential owners had to make their intentions known in person by visiting the M2 headquarters in Tokyo. It was so popular that cars were changing hands well above list price.
Beyond a regular MX-5, this upscaled car was sold as a "turn-key" race ready offering. Painted in metallic blue/black the car features a number of additions to both the body and driveline, including: a functional airdam incorporating foglights, boot spoiler and a 4 point roll cage, fixed bucket seats, aluminium filler cap, enlarged intake manifold, more aggressive pistons and camshaft profile, a more focused suspension and wheel package, and a limited slip differential.
The performance changes made to the Roadster would bump the horsepower to 130hp @ 6500rpm, and 109ft/lb of torque @ 5500rpm.
The enhanced capabilities of this car make it one of the most desirable special MX-5s.
